Key facts and figures

The North East of England has five campus based universities (Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, the University of Sunderland and Teesside University).

In 2008/09 the region's five campus based universities:

  • Had a total income of £1,050,767 million, approximately 13% of which was derived from research grants and contracts
  • Employed over 23,000 staff and educated 115,720 students, including 19,235 International students
  • Awarded over 37,000 qualifications, including 2,370 First Class Honours Degrees, 680 Doctorates and 1,160 Foundation Degrees
  • Said 'goodbye' to 23,065 graduates, over half of which were in full time paid employment or further study within six months of leaving university
