Universities for the North East is a voluntary association of the North East of England's 5 universities. Whilst these members work in partnership together through Universities for the North East, the association is not a partnership in any legal sense and as such it has no legal status. In view of this, one of the Association's members acts as the accountable body, a role which to date has been filled by Newcastle University.
The roles, responsibilities and activities of Universities for the North East and its representatives and officers are prescribed in a memorandum to which all members are signatories.
