Who we are

Universities for the North East (unis4ne) is the regional association of the North East region's five universities (Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland, Teesside) and the Open University in the North. 

The universities have been working together for over twenty years, previously under the name HESIN (Higher Education Support for Industry in the North) which was established in 1983. Universities for the North East was formally launched in the Spring of 1999 when all the Vice Chancellors signed a memorandum of agreement to:

"Co-ordinate their regional activities and identify opportunities for collaborative action so as to maximise their contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of the North East of England and develop partnerships with business, industry and public bodies"
